Exeter City were poor but luckily for them Hartlepools United were worse, and that is how the Grecians came to beat the Northern team at St James's Park. There has not been seen such an out of form and out of touch City team for a long time, and it was almost impossible to realise that apart from one change (Packer for Whitnall) it was the same side which had played so magnificently against the "Posh" just two days before. The best thing that can be said about Exeter is that they tried, and that they won. Peter Gordon opened the scoring in the fourth minute. The City then went on to baffle the opposition, and everyone else. Time and again they got the ball in front of the Hartlepools goal and time and again they missed simple chances. In that respect it was another chapter of the same old story.
