They were beaten but not disgraced. That is Manchester United's considered verdict on Exeter City's brave but unsuccessful attempt at Old Trafford for a giant-killing tag in the new Football League Cup competition. The City lost the replay simply because they never matched the fire power of the virile Manchester team, and because they had no one in their attack who could outshine Albert Quixall. A surprise choice to lead the United attack (it was the first time the £45,000 star had donned the number nine jersey) Quixall's play as leader of the attack was a revelation. He had pace, purpose, and punch. What more could one ask of a "makeshift" centre forward? In many ways Exeter's display was a reversal of that in the first meeting of these sides. Quixall made that difference.

DEFENSIVE COMPLEX.
Exeter in fact began with a defensive complex, and after falling behind in the seventh minute, Quixall being the scorer, the City never looked likely to tip the scales even when Jimmy Thompson stroked home a penalty six minutes later. Glen Wilson and Thompson often were as outstanding as Stiles and Nicholson were in an injury-weakened Manchester side. But Exeter in attack were much too limp and too orthodox to cause the home team's rearguard any real worry. Graham Rees was a disappointment, never touching the form of which he is capable, and certainly not that of his brilliance last week, and it was left to Welsh and Dale to supply the neat but always ineffective touches from the City attack. Brian Whitnall too, who shared with Rees the main honours in the first match, also failed to shine in the replay. This was particularly true of the second half when the United's forwards, inspired by Quixall, virtually ran riot, and had it not been for the top-class goalkeeping of John Lobbett the City would have been on the receiving end of a very heavy defeat.

SPARKLE AND DASH TO BRING GOALS.

Nevertheless, Exeter folk ought to be justifiably proud of the City team, for they invariably tried to play good football, and neither did they ever descend to roughness or shady tactics.

Possibly, if they had not tried to match the stars of Mr. Busby's team in cleverness and had swung the ball about more energetically they might have done better. But all that was lacking was the sparkle and dash, such as that diminutive genius Albert Quixall supplied for his team, which could bring goals. It is hoped that the acquisition of Graham Bondn will add this vital touch, which the side certainly needs. Financially Exeter City will do quite well out of their meetings home and away with Manchester United. The first yielded them £1,000, and the second instalment, also, should give them a similar profit. Undoubtedly the Grecians have also learned a great deal through meeting such first-class opposition in two exciting games.
