Referee:- Mr A.Murdoch, of Sheffield.
Exeter City were rather unlucky to be two goals to nil behind in their match at Chester, but Graham Bond put them right back in the fight with two goals, the first a 25 yards' volley, soon after the interval. Chester quickly went back into the lead only for the City, making a sustained effort, to equalise again and then go ahead. Then in the closing minutes the home side scored again to share the points. The City gave a very creditable performance three days after their gruelling cup replay with Manchester United, but it was those two goals by Bond which inspired their revival in the second half. When Exeter City secured Bond from Torquay United last week they also took another player. He is Ray Carter, a young centre forward.

Exeter City Reserves v Portland
CARTER NODS 4 IN FIRST MATCH
By Tony Court (Express and Echo)
Exeter City Reserves put out their strongest side this season-they included eight professionals- for their Western League game with Portland at St. James's Park this afternoon.
Exeter City: L. Blackmore; B. Turner, Foley; Williams P., Packer, Grant; Welsh, Scott, Carter, Bennett, Gordon.
Portland Standley; Eaton. Warren; Caswell, Robertson, Hollings; May, Way, Chaney, McGugan, Tizard.
Referee Mr. E J. Knight, of Taunton.
Ray Carter, City's recent signing from Torquay, certainly got off to a good start in his first game with his new club-he headed in two goals in the first seven minutes. And a few minutes later Peter Gordon headed in number three as he moved into the centre and nodded in a Bennett cross. Portland didn't know what had hit them-for this was a City Reserve side up to something like last season's standard at last. The first time that they did look like getting away, Turner stopped Tizard well-and sent Welsh away on a long run which ended in Carter's shot hitting the Portland crossbar.
BRILLIANT SAVE
It was nearly 20 minutes before City's amateur goalkeeper. Blackmore, had a shot to stop, but when Tizard did get in a drive, he flung himself across the goal to make a brilliant save. But the Reserves were soon moving forward again, and Welsh, who was playing well, made another run for Carter to crack in another good shot which this time was deflected for a profitless corner. Another Welsh run, and then a Williams shot which was well over. and still City kept Portland penned in their own half. Then Carter had a great chance to get his third goal as he intercepted a bad back pass. but he hurried his shot and sent wide. Williams tried another shot, a low one. and Standley dived to clutch it just on the line.
When Portland broke away for the second time in half-an-hour. Blackmore was there to make a great flying save and turn McGugan's shot round a post. As the Reserves attacked again, Foley moved right up to crack in a shot which Standley just beat down. Four minutes from half-time WELSH made it 4-0 as he ran on to a ball that Standley punched out- and drove it back into the net. Carter almost made it five as he nodded a Gordon cross goalwards. but Standley dived on it just in time; then the performance was repeated with a Carter shot, before SCOTT got the fifth.
Half-time:-
EXETER CITY RESERVES 5-0 PORTLAND
The Reserves started to play too close as the second half opened. and rather tied themselves up. But it wasn't long before they started to open out their style again. Bennett just missed a Carter crose and Welsh shot wide. Then CARTER got his third goal and City's sixth-the best of the game so far. He chased a Gordon ball right to the by-line, and though it looked hopeless he stopped it, pulled it back past two. defenders, and calmly hit it in from a very narrow angle. Bennett almost had another a couple of minutes later as he back- heeled a ball and Standley just dropped on it in time. Then Scott ran in and nodded a Welsh lob just over the bar, but CARTER headed in the seventh goal from a Welsh cross in the 61st minute. Portland were still making the occasional breakaway, but it was nearly all one-way traffic. Bennett missed two sitters; then Portland broke away again-and got a penalty as Packer brought McGugan down. But Caswell, who took it, slammed the ball against an upright and out of play. Portlands goal had some fantastic escapes in the last few minutes, and two minutes from time CARTER nodded in to to complete his second-half hat-trick" from a Foley cross; and WELSH made it nine with a great 20-yard drive
