Two weeks to the day after they were knocked out of the League Cup in a first round replay Exeter City saw their F.A.Cup hopes also disappear in the replayed first round tie at Dean Court.
Never in the lead, the City fought back in the first half but faded out of the picture in the 76th minute, when Lobbett and MacDonald between them managed to practically give away the third goal. And this goal widened the gap too far for them to have any slight remaining hope of equalising. Although Bournemouth had started with a bang and got a goal after only two minutes the City refused to get rattled, and settled down to play steady football that earned them an equaliser in the 29th minute. Bournemouth scored again a minute before half-time. And almost from the start of the second half Exeter found themselves on the defensive, and when Lobbett threw the ball out to MacDonald and Evans dashed in and scored before the full-back was able to clear it was all over bar the shouting.
