Exeter City gave a disappointing display when they were beaten by Accrington Stanley. The City had more of the game territorially but lacked finishing power.
The City kicked off towards the St James's Road end, and a move between Carter, who was making his debut, and Welsh, worked the ball right into the Accrington goalmouth, but McInnes cleared. In the 15th minute Bond gave Exeter the lead, following a clever piece of play by Thompson, Dale, and Carter.
But the visitors struck back and scored two goals. At the interval they led by 2 to 1. Although the City were having nearly all the play in the second half they seldom looked like scoring, and it was no surprise when Accrington broke away for Hudson to shoot past Lobbett, and even less of a surprise when the fourth goal was registered. By this time people were already drifting out of the ground, and they missed the goal that Dale cracked in five minutes from the end.

SCOTT GOAL FOR CITY RES.
(from the Express and Echo 19/11/1960)
Bristol City Colts win on penalty
Bristol City Colts, with only one player of first team experience-Bob Anderson, in goal-and with three trialists, had Exeter City Reserves in difficulties at the start of their Western League match at Bristol, but Jones was not unduly troubled.
Bristol City Colts: Anderson: Burt, Comer: Howarth, Linton, Hooper; Vincent, Clark, Davis, Hall Peters.
Exeter City Reserves: Jones: Whitnall, Parker: Williams (T.), Williams (A), Symes; Harrison, Scott, Donaldson. Bennett, Rees.
Referee: J. N. Rowley (Cheltenham)
Scott and Harison worked the ball nicely up the right, but Anderson held Harrison's final shot for Exeter. Rees shot over from close in, but in 15 minutes SCOTT received from Harrison and flicked the ball past Bristol's goalkeeper. After beautiful combined football Donaldson Exeter forced Anderson to a grand save by tippping over. Linton was playing well for Bristol, and Exeter had an escape when right-half Howarth drove just wide of the far post. Jones, in goal, the busier 'keeper, did his work confidently. Comer saved a goal from Harrison's corner when the bal hung on the goal-line. Bob Anderson brought off three marvelous saves in quick succession before Vincent got away and forced a corner from which DAVIES equalised. Burt made a superb clearance from Harrison at the expense of a corner which was put outside. Whitnall was outstanding for Exeter, feeding his forwards with deep passes. but Harrison was finding difficulty in eluding Comer's quick tackling.
Half-time :-
Bristol City Colts 1-1 Exeter City Res.
Bristol were overplayed when they resumed, but defended desperately until DONALDSON with a smashing drive left Anderson helpless. Comer cleared his lines time after time, but it was Exeter who were impressing with football ability. Peters, with a good run for Bristol down the wing. centred for VINCENT to score. after Davis had completely missed the ball. DAVIS scored for Bristol from a penalty.

Bristol City Colts 3-2 Exeter City Res.
