Exeter City gave a disappointing display when they were beaten by Accrington Stanley. The City had more of the game territorially but lacked finishing power.
The City kicked off towards the St James's Road end, and a move between Carter, who was making his debut, and Welsh, worked the ball right into the Accrington goalmouth, but McInnes cleared. In the 15th minute Bond gave Exeter the lead, following a clever piece of play by Thompson, Dale, and Carter.
But the visitors struck back and scored two goals. At the interval they led by 2 to 1. Although the City were having nearly all the play in the second half they seldom looked like scoring, and it was no surprise when Accrington broke away for Hudson to shoot past Lobbett, and even less of a surprise when the fourth goal was registered. By this time people were already drifting out of the ground, and they missed the goal that Dale cracked in five minutes from the end.
- Bristol City Colts beat the City Reserves at Bristol by 3-2.
