FROST INTERFERES WITH FOOTBALL.
CITY'S MATCH AT SELHURST PARK CALLED OFF.

Saturday December 24th:
Exeter City were saved from having to make a fruitless journey to London when they were notified in time that their match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park could not be played as there were several degrees of frost on the pitch.

  • At St. James's Park the City Reserves entertained Torquay United Reserves in the Western League and ran up nine goals. Ray Carter led the scoring with five, Harrison got two, Alvan Williams one, and Smith of Torquay through his own goal, one. The final result was 9 goals to 2, Bristow and Arundel netting for Torquay.

BOXING DAY:
26th December 1960
EXETER CITY 2 CRYSTAL PALACE 3
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

The City had almost all of the play in the first half, and were only ever in trouble for the first 15 minutes of the second, but they had the same old fault of poor finishing, while the visitors snapped up their chances to win by three goals to two.

Exeter City: Lobbett; Foley and MacDonald; Wilson, Harvey, and Thompson; Donaldson, Carter, Jenkins, Rees, and Dale.

Crystal Palace:- Rouse; McNichol and Noakes; Long, Evans, and Petchey; Gavin, Summersby, Uphill, Byrne, and Heckman.

Referee:- Mr J.Pickles of Stockport. Linesmen:- Messrs F.Alford and S.Hibbs.

  • Exeter's two new forwards were in action. Reg. Jenkins, signed from Plymouth Argyle, led the first team attack, and Ian Scott, from Montrose, made his debut at inside-right for the Reserves in the return match at Plainmoor, which was a lot harder for the City than the one on Saturday, though they managed to win by a goal to nil.

TUESDAY 27th DECEMBER 1960.
CITY GIVE LEADERS A BATTLE.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0,

EXETER CITY 0, Jones; Foley, MacDonald; Wilson, Harvey, Thompson; Donaldson, Carter, Jenkins, Rees, Harrison,

On Tuesday the ground at Selhurst Park had thawed out and Exeter played off the game which had been cancelled on Saturday. There was a crowd of over 20,000 present to witness a goal-less draw.

Exeter City fought long, hard and bravely to force top of the table Crystal Palace to concede a point. For most of the game the defence took a hammering yet not once did it crack. Time and time again, Harvey broke up the Palace attacks, Jones never made a slip in the City goal, Foley injured his left knee after ten minutes and spent the rest of the match hobbling on the wing, Wilson was everywhere and set a fine example of defensive play,

The City forwards when in possession moved dangerously and their spasmodic attacks had the Palace at full stretch, Jenkins looked hungry for goals and twice he brought out the best in Rouse the Palace keeper with powerful left foot drives, Carter almost gave City a shock first minute lead, his shot being kicked off the line.

Attendance 28,500.
