CITY TWICE IN ARREARS BUT FORCE A DRAW. DRAMATIC SEVEN MINUTE SCORING SPELL AT MILLWALL.
Saturday January 7th 1961.
MILLWALL 2 (Spears, Jones)
EXETER CITY 2 (Carter 2)
Played at The Den, New Cross, attendance 7,974.
Millwall:- Davies; Redmond and Brady; Bumpstead, Brand, and Anderson; Hinshelwood, Jones, Pierce, Burridge, and Spears.
Exeter City: Jones; Whitnall and MacDonald; Wilson, Harvey, and Thompson; Donaldson, Rees, Jenkins, Carter, and Dale.
Referee: Mr W.Clements of West Bromwich.
After a goalless first half Millwall took the lead 17 minutes from the start of the second period but 30 seconds later Carter scored to put Exeter level. Within four minutes Millwall went ahead again only for Carter to hit back and equalise a second time. The four goals came in a dramatic spell which lasted for only seven minutes. With three points gathered in (a win and a draw) from their last two matches Exeter City have at last lifted themselves off the bottom rung of the League, and are now above Carlisle United and Hartlepools United.
But the City will always contend that a bad decision by the referee at Millwall robbed them of victory in the 73rd minute. A ball that rebounded from the upright was headed in by Jenkins only for the prostrate Davies to punch clear from behind the goal-line.
Western League
City Reserves v Bristol Rovers Colts
Exeter City Reserves beat Bristol Rovers Colts 1-0 at St James's Park.
A 25th minute goal from inside- right PETER GORDON gave Exeter City Res. a half-time lead. But if it had not been for young Ian Bearpark, Exeter's new goalkeeper signing, things might have been different. Bearpark was signed from Bristol yesterday and was in fact playing against his own clubmates, and he played very well, making a number of good saves.
Half-time:
Exeter Res 1-0 Bristol Rovers Colts.
Result
Exeter Res 1-0 Bristol Rovers Colts.
