FOG AND SMOKE PUTS AN END TO CUP GAME.
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 11TH:
CITY RESERVES V WEYMOUTH.
The Western League Cup quarter-final between Exeter City Reserves and Weymouth came to an abrupt end after 53 minutes of play when the Devonport referee, Mr. T. Bishop, brought the players off the field because of a combination of fog and smoke from the railway that blacked-out the top half of the St James's Park pitch. At the time the City were leading by two goals to one, and as far as could be seen, looked good for a win. Weymouth were skippered by Jim Dailey, who was an Exeter player some years ago, and it was he who gave his side the lead in the 21st minute against the run of the play.
Bennett and Harvey, the latter with a penalty kick, scored for the City, and a minute or two before the stoppage the Weymouth centre half, limped off with a knee injury that looked very serious.
EXETER CITY ON THE UPGRADE: FIRST AWAY WIN. MANSFIELD MISSED A PENALTY IN CLOSING MINUTES.
