FIRST MINUTE GOAL AND ANOTHER WIN FOR THE CITY. EIGHT POINTS IN FIVE GAMES AND CLIMBING THE LEAGUE TABLE.

Saturday January 21st 1961.

EXETER CITY 2 (Carter, Rees)
STOCKPORT COUNTY 1 (Murdock)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,582.

Exeter City: Jones; Foley and MacDonald; Wilson, Williams, and Thompson; Donaldson, Rees, Jenkins, Carter, and Dale.

Stockport County:- Lea; Murray and Webb; Birch, Hodder, and Porteous; Wilson, Anderson, Fletcher, Murdock, and Davock.

Referee:- Mr C.W.Kingston of Newport. Linesmen: Messrs S.W.Plank and D.Counsell.

After the City had taken the lead in the first minute there was no further scoring until midway through the second half when a second Exeter goal brought an immediate reply from Stockport County. Then in a dour struggle the visitors tried in vain to equalise.

The first half was full of good football, but slow. Pace changed completely in the latter half and the spectators were regaled with 45 really exciting minutes of football.  Alvan Williams was cool and commanding at centre half, and Jimmy Thompson starred with him in the City defence. Dale and Carter in the attack were outstanding and Jenkins not far behind them. Draws with Crystal Palace and Millwall, and victories over Rochdale, Mansfield, and now Stockport, have provided Exeter City with eight points, and they are at last beginning to climb the League ladder.

Western League
Bath City v Exeter City Reserves

After beating Yeovil Reserves by 3-0 last week the City Reserves were today defeated at Bath by Bath City Reserves 3-1, their one goal coming from Peter Bennett in the first half. Ian Bearpark, the new signing from Bristol Rovers, kept goal.

After an entertaining first half both sides had scored one goal, in their Western League game at Twerton Park. In the early stages Bath played some good football and Bearpark in the Exeter goal made two fine saves from Macfarlane and Wilshire.

WILSHIRE, the home centre-forward, showed plenty of dash and well deserved the goal he scored in the 25th minute. He went close on several other occasions. Exeter's equalising goal came a minute from the break when inside-forward BENNETT headed a neat goal.
