EXETER CITY 1 (Rees)

Played at London-road, attendance 11,518.

Referee:- Mr A.L.Mason of Maidstone.

Exeter City's recent run of victories was abruptly halted to - day when they crashed to their heaviest defeat so far this season on the Peterborough United ground. Three goals were scored before the interval and four more afterwards by the goal-hungry "Posh", and after holding out for 23 minutes Exeter's defence cracked up. Peterborough, who gained entry to the Football League this season after trying for years, during which they won the championship of the Midland League five times between 1955-56 and 1959-60, have not taken long to prove that there are teams outside the League which are as good if not better than some already in it. They are riding on the crest of a wave, having last Saturday gone to Stockport and banged in six goals without reply and on Wednesday played Aston Villa to a goal at Villa Park in the Cup-tie, and now with the seven goals they put into the Exeter net look likely to set up a new high-scoring record, which at present stands at 128 in a season by Bradford City and Aston Villa before the war. With seventeen games left the Peterborough total is 84. And as they are now chasing Crystal Palace at the top of the League they appear a certainty for promotion at the very first attempt.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 15TH:
WESTERN LEAGUE CUP :
RESERVES IN SEMI FINAL.
CITY RESERVES 2 WEYMOUTH 1.

Two goals from Peter Gordon gave Exeter City Reserves a narrow win over Weymouth at St James's Park, but those goals were sufficient to put them through to the semi-final of the Western League Cup. Exeter might have doubled their score but for the fact that a lot of their finishing was either weak or wild or sometimes both, and that the Weymouth goalkeeper played well enough to stop most of the straight shots.
