EXETER CITY LACK A GOOD MARKSMAN.
VICTORY FOR ALDERSHOT AFTER A LEAN SPELL.
Saturday February 25th 1961.
ALDERSHOT 3 (Lawlor, Richards, Taylor) EXETER CITY 1 (Carter)
Played at the Recreation Ground, attendance 5,000.
Aldershot:- Marshall; Bannister and Devereux; Kirkup, Shipwright, and Tyrer; Taylor, Richards, Deakin, Woan, and Lawlor.
Exeter City: Jones; Foley and MacDonald; Mitchell, Williams, and Thompson; Donaldson, Rees, Jenkins, Carter, and Dale.
Referee:- Mr J.G.Williams, of Nottingham.
With a much changed forward line Aldershot ended a recent barren spell when they won a decisive victory over the City. Exeter City, who were losing by a goal to nil at half-time, can blame the lack of a good marksman for their defeat. The defence, in which Mitchell was back to all his old form after a long absence through injury, had a much better game than the score indicates. A heavy downpour of rain an hour before the kick-off swamped the ground.
Aldershot, so out of form that they had not scored a single goal in any of their previous eight matches, fielded their new player from Northampton, Mike Deakin, and Alan Woan, who was transferred from Crystal Palace a fortnight ago. They made a difference.
- The City yesterday transferred Jack Wilkinson to Wellington Town, a club in the Midland League. Wilkinson had lost his first - team place following an injury on New Year's Eve.
Exeter City v Glastonbury
Exeter City Res. 7-1 Glastonbury
After showing such good form in recent matches, Glastonbury had one of their "off" days at St. James' Park, Exeter on Saturday and were heavily beaten by a strong City Reserves side. Exeter, the faster team, held a 2-0 interval lead through goals by BENNETT and BOND. At one point in the second half four goals were scored in the space of three minutes, three to Exeter and one to Glastonbury. Exeter's second half scorers were SCOTT (2), BENNETT, BOND and HARRISON. IVOR COMPTON scored Glastonbury's goal.
