Played at St James's Park, attendance 4,483.

Exeter City beat Oldham by three goals at St James's Park thanks to a sound defence and a forward line that showed an imagination that has often been lacking this season. Arnold Mitchell, restored as captain, led the City out to make his first home appearance since breaking his leg last September. And he had a difficult job on his hands because he was marking the star man of Oldham, Scottish international inside-forward Bobby Johnstone. Partnering Johnstone on the left wing was the former City forward, Brian Birch.

Oldham kicked off facing the town end and strong sunshine. Their defence was cracked open after 25 minutes of even play when Carter put Exeter ahead with a fine headed goal from Dale's centre. The game turned out to be a triumph for MacDonald, Mitchell, and the City attack in general. MacDonald had a great game at left back, and Mitchell really tightened up the defence and played a true captain's game.

Portland v Exeter City Reserves

For the third match in succession flu-hit Portland had trainer Darkin in their team. Territorially the Islanders had the more of the early play although their goalkeeper Morris did well to save a fierce shot from Scott. Exeter came more into the game but were unable to pierce a workmanlike home defence.

Half-time: Portland 0; Exeter 0

Scott scored the winner for Exeter in the 2nd half

Result Portland 0-1 Exeter
