CITY MISS THEIR CHANCES IN THE NORTH WEST. SMALL CROWD SEES WORKINGTON GRAB THREE GOALS.

Saturday March 11th 1961.

WORKINGTON 3
(Bradbury, McGarry, Hinchcliffe penalty) EXETER CITY 1
(Rees)

Played at Borough Park, attendance 2,011.

Workington:- Wright; Wilson and Brown; Hinchcliffe, Tennant, and Burkinshaw; Womack, Bradbury, Dixon, McGarry, and Kirkup.

Exeter City: Jones; Foley and MacDonald; Mitchell, Williams, and Thompson; Donaldson, Rees, Jenkins, Carter, and Dale.

Referee:- Mr H.Webb of Leeds.

Jenkins had a chance to put Exeter in the lead in the first minute of the game when a centre from Donaldson was headed back to him by Tennant, but the centre-forward's effort was badly directed. Played before a small crowd on the spacious Borough Park ground on a cold and blustery day it was hardly an inspiring game. The City seldom looked like winners despite some fairly attractive midfield play. In front of goal the attack was deplorably weak and the defence was susceptible to speedy raids.

The Workington forwards were not much better than Exeter's, but they did manage to grab three goals, the last from a penalty, in 25, 68, and 85 minutes. In the last few minutes Workington were awarded a second penalty, and although Hinchcliffe had just converted a spot kick Kirkup for reasons best known to the side's captain was detailed to take it, and his shot missed the goal completely, going wide and too high.

  • Western League Exeter City Reserves beat Taunton at St James's Park by 7 goals to nil.
