CITY BEATEN BUT SHOCK THE COBBLERS. BROWN'S HAT TRICK INCLUDED TWO FROM PENALTY SPOT.
Tuesday April 4th 1961.
NORTHAMPTON TOWN 3 (Brown 3)
EXETER CITY 1 (Rees)
Played at the County Ground, attendance 7,000.
Northampton Town:- Coe; Phillips and Claypole; Branston, Gale, and Mills; Everitt, Brown, Edwards, Moran, and Lines.
Exeter City: Jones; Foley and MacDonald; Mitchell, Williams, and Harvey; Donaldson, Rees, Jenkins, Carter, and Gordon.
Although Exeter City lost this return game by the same margin as the one at St James's Park yesterday they made Northampton fight really hard until the last six minutes. And they atoned for yesterday's moderate display by putting up a second half performance that had their hosts rattled. Then, with six minutes left, Foley handled in the penalty area and Brown scored from the spot to complete his hat trick. But up to that point Exeter had lasted the better of the two teams and enjoyed much more of the play after the interval. It was a hard game in the first period with Exeter playing with lots of spirit which shook the Cobblers, but fortunate to be only one goal behind by the interval. They had many escapes, although Brown's opening goal in the tenth minute was disputed on the grounds of offside. Rees quickly replied to that goal following clever work by Gordon on the left. Then Williams was penalised for a foul, and Brown converted the first of Northampton's two penalties.
