A late goal, the only one of the match, gave Exeter City the points when they visited Accrington Stanley this afternoon.

Eight minutes from the final whistle Donaldson put the ball safely in the net after a fine run by Mitchell.

The weather was beautifully fine and the pitch perfect when Exeterwon the toss and elected to play up the slope with a slight breeze at their backs.

They swept into the attack and Vipham was glad to be in the way of a lively header by Carter after Gordon had crossed accurately into the penalty area.

Hudson missed the best chances of the game when Jones came out and crowded him off the ball in the 30th minute, and again just before half time as Devine's pass found him unmarked on the six yard line with only Jones to beat. But he could not expect to do it with the wild shot he made, and the City breathed again.

The City Reserves at St James's Park lost to Bristol City Colts by 1 goal to nil.

Wednesday April 12th 1961.
CITY RESERVES MADE IT HARD FOR THEMSELVES. THEY COULD HAVE WON BY DOUBLE FIGURE MARGIN.

Exeter City Reserves 2 (Bond, Bennett) Barnstaple Town 1 (Ellaway)

Played at St James's Park, attendance 300.

Exeter City Reserves:- Lobbett; B. Turner and Whitnall; P.Williams, Packer, and Grant; Harrison, J.Dodd, Bennett, Bond, and T.Irons.

Barnstaple Town: Elliott; Cleverly and Spearman; Packard, Coles, and Williams; Norman, Fewings, Ellaway, Young, and Bishop.

Although the City Reserves accounted for Barnstaple they could and should have won by a double figure margin. Barnstaple were never in the game until the Reserves started their usual habit of relaxing once in the lead, and in the whole of the 90 minutes the North Devon side had only two real raids on Exeter's goal. The first, after 20 minutes, ended with Bill Ellaway tapping the ball into the net after a defensive mix-up and the second, in another similar mix-up, was cleared. Exeter then woke up and got two goals, and the second half might just as well not have been played.
