City fought hard to earn a point against a useful looking Barrow side. With grim determination they restricted Barrow to a lone goal and came back in the last 15 minutes to snatch an equaliser. The Barrow team dominated the play for three quarters of the game, every forward having a crack at the Exeter goal but they lacked a marksman, Jones made a truly magnificent save from Clark. Lowes put Barrow in front after 21 minutes from a narrow angle, from the first minute of the game to well into the second half the City goal was under bombardment, A torrential downpour sent both sides skidding about with little good football and it was rather against the run of play when City's unmarked centre forward Jenkins, headed the equaliser close to the end when the Barrow defenders failed to catch him offside.

City's player/manager Wilson got through a tremendous amount of work, although at times some of his tackling was rugged, he has his name taken on one occasion. Carter was the pick of the attack which had little opportunity to get going throughout the game.

Western League
Welton Rovers v Exeter City Reserves

Welton's Great Fight At Exeter

The City Reserves won their last Western League home match of the season when they scored 5 goals to 4 against Welton Rovers.

For the second time this season Welton Rovers and Exeter City Reserves figured in a game producing nine goals, this time at St. James's Park-but. although the City squared accounts on their farewell home Western League appearance. they could uld not match Rovers' triumph earlier rlier in the season. Exeter won the return match 5-4. On the play they had perhaps a chance to equal Welton's September nine-goal feat-but relaxation at one period, following early defensive shakiness, saw Rovers come a lot closer to them than seemed possible.

Against the lone all-amateur side in the Western League, Exeter's blend of ex-pros-five amateurs took a fourth minute lead and in half an hour had made it 4-0 against inadequate defensive coverage. Rovers replied twice to make it 4-2 at the interval. and scored twice to Exeter's once in the second half-strangely enough as City's defence shook off its earlier uncertainty. Inside left SCOTT delivered the opening blow for Exeter hooking the ball in from a header by amateur. J Dodds (inside right), after a second unpaid local, Irons had sent the ball over from the outside left position. Not a Welton player touched the ball before it entered the net. For over 80 minutes of the game. Exeter's left back, and recently first- time regular. Theo Foley. was on the left wing. limping from an ankle injury. In the tenth minute P Williams. who had moved from right half, to the defence in place of Foley, moved forward to crack a 20 yard drive past the Rovers' goalkeeper, Webber. Deputy for Lobbett in Exeter's goal. A Clark saved easily from right winger Curtis in Welton's first attack of the game, but in a return raid, centre forward Peter BENNETT got the first of his two goals for Exeter (15 and 34 minutes) The second of these was from a header. Welton's fighting heart was rewarded by goals from left-winger SIMMONS (40 minutes) when he seized his chance smartly as Exeter's defence stumbled, and by inside right ATTWOOD. The "passenger". FOLEY headed Exeter's fifth goal (54 minutes) following a corner on the right. But Rovers were still persisting in a lost cause, and although Exeter's was steadier now, they slackened off and FIELDING Rovers inside left suprised everyone with a snap shot to make it 5-3. Welton resisted further Exeter pressure and a great header by centre-forward BARKER turned an Attwood centre into goal number 4. Whilst the football was not of the classic mould there was plenty of entertainment.

But it is goodbye to Exeter City Reserves - their junior team will operate in Senior Division 1 of the Exeter and District League, which is the second division of that competition. Not the best training ground perhaps for a club struggling to stay in Division 4 of the Football League.
