Fears that Exeter might slide back into the Fourth Division bottom four deepened when they crumbled to a three goal defeat at Darlington, They were deserving of a better fate for they held Darlington with ease up to the interval and with better finishing might well have been in the lead. As it was Darlington made a second half comeback and City just folded up. City began to back pedal in the second half and Darlington took the lead in the 54th minute when Spence headed in from a corner, Ten minutes later Morton headed in a second goal followed three minutes from the end when Rayment scored to give Darlington a flattering victory margin, City did not look like a side near the bottom, they played some attractive football at times on a heavy ground with water lying on it in pools, Wilson and Gordon were Exeter's star men. Wilson marshalled his men well in the first half. There was little response from the forwards apart from Gordon and possibly Jenkins, Gordon set up a string of centres but there was no one able to take advantage of them,
