And in the Western League
Yeovil Town (a)

WAS PIERCE REALLY OFF-SIDE? REFEREE IN DOUBT.

EXETER CITY 0 MANSFIELD TOWN 3
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 22ND 1962.

The best and only things that can be said about Exeter City's second three nothing defeat of the season on their own ground are that the team tried hard and fought hard and in fact played better when they were three goals behind.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Johnston and MacDonald; Anderson, Sanders, and Hughes; McMillan, Rees, Pierce, Sells, and Jenkins.

Mansfield Town:- Treharne; Toon and Humble; Coates, Gill, and S.Chapman; Askey, Straw, Wagstaff, R. Chapman, and Hall.

Referee:- Mr N.Matthews of Leicester.Linesmen:- Messrs T.Bishop and H.Gisborne.

The City's defensive mistakes were obvious enough. Wagstaff did not have to be a "John Charles" to get his 8th, 40th, and 67th minute goals from two shots and a header. While Mansfield moved the ball well when coming forward they were too often helped to get possession by the City's hesitation, and their reluctance to part with the ball quickly enough. Pierce did give the home crowd the satisfaction of seeing the ball in the opposition's net for the first time this season with a 3rd minute header, but after a dubious look at the linesman Mr. N. A. Matthews, the Leicester referee, gave him off-side. It was a very close thing and Pierce did not look to be offside and even the referee seemed to be in some doubt.
