SATURDAY 25th AUGUST 1962.

MITCHELL INSPIRES CITY DRAW.

CHESTERFIELD (Meredith) 1
EXETER CITY (Green) 1.

KICK OFF 6.30 P.M.

Chesterfield:- Powell; Clarke and Sears;
Whitham, Blakey, and Frear; Duncan, Kerry, Poole, Rackstraw, and Meredith.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Johnston and MacDonald; Mitchell, Anderson, and Hughes; Sells, Rees, Green, Pierce, and Jenkins.

City can thank one man for gaining their first Fourth Division point of the season at Chesterfield, he was veteran wing hall Mitchell. A goal down after only three minutes, City's defence vas under almost constant pressure from the lively Chesterfield attack, City seemed resigned to defeat, but not Mitchell, he rallied the defence, got the forward line soving and provided the pass for Green to smash home an equaliser on his debut. Exeter were almost overrun in the first half, after Meredith scored from a Kerry pass. The home tean completely dominated the play. They had enough chances to have sewn the game up by half time but their forwards squandered them. Chesterfield started the second half in the same aggressive mood, but keeper Tinsley having a steady game and Mitchell kept them at bay. Things looked even worse for City When Hughes was sent off early in the second half, but no sooner had Exeter been reduced to ten men, then the fight back began. After 57 minutes, Green scored an equaliser from 25 yards which went into the roof of the net. Now the Exeter forward line began to move with cohesion and with both sides striving hard for a winner, the City forwards broke through a somewhat panicky Chesterfield defence to test keeper Powell with well placed shots.

WESTERN LEAGUE:
CITY RESERVES 0 BRIDGWATER 4.

PLAYED AT ST JAMES'S PARK,
Attendance 855.

Bridgwater Town, managed by ex-Exeter City forward, Bill Brown, in their match against the City Reserves, fielded four old "Grecians" at St James's Park this afternoon.

Exeter City Reserves:- Clark; Smyth and Davis; Brown, Sanders, and Grace;
McMillan, Carter, McGinn, Burnett, and McMeechan.

Bridgwater:- Beal; Oliphant and Beer; Henderson, Packer, and Rice; Black, Pulman, Baker, Emmonds, and Irons.

Exeter had a shock after only four minutes when Black volleyed a weak goal-kick by Clark straight back into the net from 30 yards, with the City goalkeeper unable to get back under his bar in time to save the shot. Within another five minutes Bridgwater's accurate passing and inter changing of positions put them two goals up, Baker volleying past the helpless Clark while unmarked. Further goals were obtained by Baker and Black, and Grace missed a penalty for Exeter.
