Torquay United Reserves (h)
CITY FOUGHT WELL BUT ATTACK LACKED STEADINESS. MONDAY AUGUST 27TH: MANSFIELD TOWN 1
EXETER CITY 0
A little more steadiness from their forwards and Exeter City could have surprised their fans, and Mansfield, instead of going down by the only goal scored.
Mansfield Town:- Treharne; Toon and Humble; Coates, Gill, and S.Chapman; Askey, Straw, Wagstaff, R.Chapman, and Hall.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Johnston and MacDonald; Mitchell, Anderson, and Hughes; Sells, Rees, Pierce, Green, and Jenkins.
Referee:- Mr J.S.Pickles of Stockport.
The "Stags" have made a great start, and with memories of their easy win at St. James's Park last Wednesday still fresh their approach to the return game was inclined to be too casual. That could have been their undoing, and it might have been if Rees had snapped up an early chance for the City. Exeter fought grimly all the way through but were out of luck when they rallied strongly in the latter part of the match. Wagstaff, who scored all the goals at Exeter, got the winner with a header which scraped the upright as it squeezed into the net.
