SIXTEEN YEAR OLD RUTLEY COOL AND CONSTRUCTIVE.
LEAGUE CUP FIRST ROUND:
ALDERSHOT 2 EXETER CITY O.
Wednesday September 5th: Sixteen year old apprentice Peter Rutley has most likely played himself into a permanent first team place by his performance in the League Cup-tie at Aldershot, even though the City lost. No-one could ever have guessed that it was his first game in a major league competition. He was coolly constructive, as fast as the next man and every bit as competitive.
As regards the rest of the team the sweeping changes which included the introduction of four untried young players did not work anything like an immediate miracle and there is an urgent need for a really good sharp-shooting centre-forward.
Aldershot: Jones; Thomas and Devereux; Conner, Henry, and Tyrer; Burton, Stepney, Norris, Mulgrew, and Prescott.
Exeter City: Tinsley; Smyth and Davis; Brown, Anderson, and Rutley;
Rees, Mitchell, Green, Welsh, and McMillan.
Though their first goal was a lucky one, Tyrer's 20th minute drive going in off Davis, there was no doubt that Aldershot deserved to win. The second goal followed in nine more minutes when a corner by Burton was headed past Tinsley by Stepney.
EXETER CITY RESERVES 4
BARNSTAPLE 3
AT EXETER.
The struggling Barnstaple side surprised everyone at St. James's by giving the Reserves an extremely hard first half. From the kick-off they looked the more nippy side but they wilted in the second half. Arundel opened their account after only four minutes, but Pierce and Southcombe got a goal each for Exeter. Drake replied for Barum, and it was 2-2 at half time.
Exeter team:- Clark; Johnston, MacDonald; Hughes, Sanders, Grace; Southcombe, Sells, Pierce, McGinn, Jenkins.
