Brentford (a)

And in the Western League
Welton Rovers (h)

CITY WERE BEATEN BUT NOT DISGRACED.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH: BRENTFORD 3 EXETER CITY 1.

Brentford's new signing, Scottish international John Dick, who has played about 350 games for West Ham, soon made his presence felt in his debut at Griffin Park this afternoon, and scored a first half goal against Exeter City.

Brentford: Cake bread; Coote and Gitsham; Crowe, Gelson, and Higginson; Block, Summers, McAdams, Dick, and McLeod.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Hughes, Anderson, and Sanders; Welsh, Mitchell, Green, Carter, and Jenkins.

Referee:- Mr C.F.Duxbury of Preston. Linesmen: Messrs F.Thoday and S.A.Hibbs.

The score of three one makes the City's performance sound a lot worse than it really was. They deserved a better fate. The forwards showed more bite than at any time this season, and but for the decision by the referee not to allow Exeter a goal halfway through the second half when the ball and goalkeeper were bundled into the net by Carter things might have been a lot different. Sanders and Mitchell were absolutely tireless, while Jenkins and Green were the best forwards. Carter got Exeter's goal.

CITY RESERVES 3
WELTON ROVERS 3
AT EXETER.

Exeter City Reserves were a goal up inside the first minute, a pass from McGinn finding Southcombe, who hammered the ball past Bateman with a confident shot.

City Reserves:- Clark; Quarrington and Davis; Brown, Johnston, and Grace; McGinn, Rees, Southcombe, Sells, and McMeechan.

Welton Rovers:- Bateman; Margary and Down; Edwards, McClachlan, and Chedgy; Painter, Francis, Dudbridge, Canning, and Simons.

With the score at two each in the second half Johnston mis-directed a back pass into his own net but Rees recovered the situation for Exeter with a nice goal in the last ten minutes.
