Match 08
12th September 1962
Doncaster Rovers (h)

And in the Western League
Bideford (a)

CITY STILL WAITING FOR A WIN AND A HOME GOAL. WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12TH: EXETER CITY 0 DONCASTER 1.

Doncaster Rovers at St James's Park on Wednesday evening were the worst team to have played against Exeter this season, and it seems likely that they are the worst team in the Fourth Division, yet it did not prevent them from beating Exeter City by a goal to nil. That was simply because the City forwards had one of those matches when they wouldn't even have got a goal from a penalty kick.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Hughes, Anderson, and Sanders; Welsh, Mitchell, Green, Carter, and Jenkins.

Doncaster Rovers:- Potter; Wales and Conwell; Raine, Thompson, and Bratt;
Hale, Booth, Ripley, Windross, and Sambrook.

Referee:- Mr J.Finney of Hereford.
Linesmen:- Messrs D.H.Counsell and D.Milverton.

The City forwards made many mistakes and the defence just one. But that one slip by the rearguard which allowed Windross to head the ball past Tinsley in the 65th minute cost Exeter the game. From start to finish the pattern of play was that of the ball being kicked up towards the visitors' goal, and there can never have been a side so thoroughly out-played as Doncaster and yet turn out to be the winners. This was Doncaster's first win of the season. Exeter City a are still waiting for theirs and the spectators are still waiting to see a goal by the home side at St James's Park.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH: BIDEFORD 2 CITY RESERVES 0.

The City Reserves were beaten by two goals to nil in a scrappy game for Western League points at the Bideford Sports Ground. Both goals were scored by Long, who was once on Exeter's books. Johnston was injured in this match and so is out of the side which will represent the Reserves at Bristol City's ground on Saturday.

The City team at Bideford was:-
Clark; Quarrington and Davis; Brown, Johnston, and Grace; Southcombe, Rees, McGinn, Sells, and Pierce.
