CITY SLIP UP AFTER TAKING THE LEAD IN FIRST HALF.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 29th

EXETER CITY 1 CREWE 1.

Exeter City took the lead in the 29th minute but faded out badly in the second half and in the end had to be content with a draw. The visitors' goal was scored from the penalty spot. There was a crowd of about 4,000 at St James's Park when the teams appeared.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Hughes, Anderson, and Sanders; Rees, Rutley, Mitchell, Carter, and Jenkins.

Crewe Alexandra:- Hickson; McGill and Leigh; Haydock, Maloney, and Shepherd; Pennington, Wheatley, Lord, King, and Smith.

Referee:- Mr K.G.Aston of Ilford. Linesmen:- Messrs B.H.Watts and R.C.Stretch.

Sanders headed clear from a visiting attack and the ball went out to Rees, who was fouled. Rees took the free-kick himself, swinging the ball well into the goalmouth and Carter jumped high to score with a forceful and well-directed header. Crewe were not playing any good football at all yet managed to draw level. Lord went down as he was tackled by Anderson and the referee gave a penalty from which Haydock beat Tinsley with a good shot in the corner. It may have seemed an unjust decision on the part of the referee but it served Exeter right for their mediocre play and their
squandering of good chances earlier.
