CITY GAIN IN CONFIDENCE AND WIN IN THE NORTH.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 20th
HARTLEPOOLS UNITED 0
EXETER CITY 2.
Ray Carter was the dominating figure in Exeter City's forward line at Hartlepools. After his goal the team gained in confidence, and went on to win, and when Hartlepools tried to fight back the City defence remained cool under pressure. Ken Thomson, the 32 year-old former Stoke City and Middlesbrough centre half, was making his home debut for the Northerners, but they were without two of their regular defenders, including the captain, Bilcliff.
Hartlepools United:- Oakley; Lackenby and Brown; McGregor, Thomson, and Johnson; Bircham, McLean, Edgar, Younger, and Burlison.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Rutley, Johnston, and Sanders; McMillan, Rees, Pierce, Carter, and Jenkins.
Referee:- Mr J.E.Carr, of Sheffield.
The skies were dull with rain threatening when the teams came out with about three and a half thousand spectators present. Two good chances of scoring were wasted by Hartlepools, then in the tenth minute Carter gave Exeter the lead, tapping the ball into an empty net with Oakley sprawling after diving across his goal in a vain attempt to get the better of Jenkins. By the time Rees notched the City's second geal in the second half Exeter were well on top.

Yeovil:- Jones; Leather, Young; Chant, Topping, Watts; Mattock, Hedges, Withey, Boulton, and Hann.
