Weston Super Mare (a)
CITY ARE STRUGGLING AGAIN AND LOSE AT HOME.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 27th
EXETER CITY 1 DARLINGTON 3.
Exeter City gave another poor display at home this afternoon, and Darlington took the honours and the points. The Northerners got an early lead, and after Carter had equalised they went ahead again with a penalty. Then they got a third goal
after the change of ends. Attendance 3,857, receipts 494. Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald;
Rutley, Johnston, and Sanders; McMillan, Rees, Green, Carter, and Jenkins.
Darlington:- Peacock; Whitehead and Mulholland; Peverell, Greener, and Scott; Taylor, Lawton, Robson, Moran, and Luke.
Referee:- Mr J.R.Loynton of Solihull. Linesmen:- Messrs S.A.Hibbs and W.Webster.
This was another feeble attempt by the City to play football worthy of even the Fourth Division, and only three of the men, MacDonald, Carter, and Jenkins, are exempt from blame. The game was only two minutes old when Darlington went ahead with a copybook goal. Luke crossed a good ball into the Exeter goalmouth and Lawton headed it home, clean as a whistle. But Carter, with an equally well headed goal gave Exeter some hope shortly afterwards. This, however, was short-lived, Moran stroking home a penalty kick after Johnston had punched out a goal-bound header from Robson.
