Match 20
3rd November 1962
FA Cup 1st Round
Gravesend (a)

And in the Western League
Dorchester (h)

OUT GO EXETER CITY AGAIN IN ROUND ONE.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 3rd

GRAVESEND 3 EXETER CITY 2.

Exeter City have quickly lost interest in the Association Cup, for they were beaten at Gravesend, or more correctly at Northfleet, by the Southern League club. Older followers of the Grecians will remember without difficulty the only previous occasion when Exeter City's first team played on this ground. Just over thirty years ago the City's 3-0 victory here was the beginning of the Cup trail that led to the defeat of two teams in the First Division and one in the Second, and a sixth round draw at Sunderland which put the Grecians in the hat for the semi final. To most followers of Exeter City this, the season of 1930-31, was the most glorious and exciting of all.

Gravesend United:- Humphreys; McDonald and Sanchez; Cameron, Newcombe, and Walley;Williams, Sitford, McNicol, Easton, and Golding.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Hughes, Anderson, and Sanders; Welsh, Mitchell, Pierce, Carter, and Rees.

Today the City led at the interval and got another in the second half, but Gravesend, battling ferociously on the heavy ground, staged a magnificent rally, equalised, and against all the odds grabbed the winner with a header by Williams in the very last minute.

CITY RESERVES 2 DORCHESTER 1
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

Exeter applied early pressure and came close to scoring when Green headed over the bar and then saw his powerful shot saved by Neal on the line. After 25 minutes Sells scored the first goal.

City Reserves:- Boag; Quarrington and Davis; Lightfoot, Parsons and Gillard; McMillan, Hurrell, Green, Sells and McMeechan.

Dorchester Town: Neal; Smith, and Hillier; Penford, Groves, and Macdonald; Stroud, Brown, Fuge, Curtis and Greening.

Green's persistence paid off on the resumption when he went through on his own to beat Neal, and Greening scored for Dorchester.
