The Aldershot defence had a fairly good record but the City moved so well that they prized them open easily. Every time that they got near the visitors goal they looked dangerous. The amazing thing was Exeter had come from behind to win, Fighting back after their none too sure defence had given goals to Burton and Tyrer midway through the first half in a five minute spell, Fighting was the word, Welsh challenged for everything and others followed suit. The feeling spread back to the defence and everyone worked to set up attack after attack and the goals came, Pierce and Carter got one each before half time, Carter and Mitchell scored in the second half. There could have been more. Only some bad luck and some good saves from Jones and the woodwork prevented Exeter from getting half a dozen goals. Man of the match was Pierce. He hit top form and proved to be a really good leader of the City attack. On this showing he must keep his place, so must the rest of the much maligned forwards, The defence, not as steady as they should have been in the first half slowly gained confidence. In which Saunders and Hughes worked tirelessly.

Match Summary

Exeter City staged a fine recovery against Aldershot, when after being two goals down in the first half hour they equalised before the interval. Then in the second half they scored two more goals, which gave the team its first victory home for seven weeks. The City forwards put on their best show of the season, with Barry Pierce having a particularly good game. He got the first goal, Ray Carter then got two more and Arnold Mitchell slammed in the fourth three minutes from the final whistle.

MINEHEAD 3 CITY RESERVES 1
AT MINEHEAD.

Most of the earlier attacking play came from Minehead, and in the first ten minutes the City goal came under regular pressure. Smith missed a glorious opportunity of giving Minehead the lead by failing to convert a free kick well placed by Willetts. In the City's rare excursions into the home side's penalty area it was usually Sells who carried the greatest threat. Boag earned applause for saving a scorching drive from Comer, but was beaten after 25 minutes, Drummond placing a corner kick nicely for Causon to head Minehead into the lead. Drummond beat Johnston for speed and netted another goal and Jones reduced the arrears. Smith in the second half added a third goal for Minehead.
