PIERCE'S TWO GOALS IN FAST GAME AT BRADFORD.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 1st

BRADFORD CITY 2 EXETER CITY 3.

Exeter City, trailing by 2-1 in a fast-moving game at Bradford this afternoon with only seventeen minutes left, rallied to take both the points when Barry Pierce rattled in two goals in that many minutes. Exeter had taken the lead after 16 minutes of the first half, but the home team soon equalised and then went ahead as stated.

Bradford City:- Roper; Storton and Noon; Hoyland, Ellam, and Mollat; Webster, Devitt, McCole, Harland, and Swain.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Hughes, Anderson, and Sanders; Welsh, Mitchell, Pierce, Carter, and Rees.

Referee:- Mr S.Stoakes of Nottingham.

As far as can be remembered Exeter City have never had a forward who can head the ball as well as Ray Carter can. The first thing he did following his transfer from Torquay United was to score four goals with his head and one with his foot in a reserve team match. That was just over two years ago, since when in the scoring of roughly sixty goals for the City first team and reserve team it is a safe bet that about threequarters of this total have come from headers. And he was on the mark again today at Bradford in the first half, when from the precise centre delivered from the right wing by Mitchell, up jumped the bearded inside-left to meet the ball squarely on his forehead to send the object flying into the net well wide of the helpless goal keeper. And then, late in the game and in the gathering gloom and fog it was Pierce, who after firing one shot into the net "did a Ray Carter" to nod home his second, which sunk Bradford without trace.
