CITY'S SHOCK FOR THE LEADERS:

REES THE STAR.

SATURDAY FEB. 23RD 1963,

EXETER CITY 2 OLDHAM 1.

Exeter City could hardly have given their supporters a better tonic when they restarted the League programme at St. James's Park today by defeating the Fourth Division leaders, Oldham Athletic. Oldham took an early lead, but the City were soon hitting back, and were level at half-time. Their second goal came after 11 minutes of the second half had been played to give them a thoroughly deserved win. Graham Rees was the star of the Exeter team.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Carter, Henderson, Pierce, and Jenkins.

Oldham Athletic:- Bollands; Branagan and Marshall; McColl, Williams, and Jarvis; Ledger, Bowie, Lister, Colquhoun, and Whitaker.

Referee:- Mr S. Yates of Bristol.
Linesmen: Messrs H.G.Stennett and R.J.Edwards.

This result was a real surprise, and a real boost to the City in their troubles. They had just as much a share of the match as the visitors, and with an inside-forward with more idea of the where abouts of the target they must have won by more goals.

Rees, always full of fight and effort, was the City's best forward, and the equal of any in the Oldham front line. Harvey and Smyth, who had to mark Oldham's best men, were practically unbeatable.

BARNSTAPLE TOWN 0
EXETER CITY 0.

The Mill-road ground looked like a farmyard at the start of today's Western League match. Three games in two weeks had left their mark on the pitch and there was little grass to be seen. Exeter attacked straight away and only a timely tackle by Hancock prevented Southcombe getting clean through the home defence. The home side had their opportunities, particularly in the second
half, but their forwards were too slow.
