Match 35
18th March 1963
York City (a)

CITY EARN ANOTHER POINT IN FAST AND SKILFUL MATCH.

MONDAY MARCH 18TH 1963:
YORK CITY 3 EXETER CITY 3.

Exeter City made two tremendous rallies to save a point with a last minute goal after a grand display of fast and entertaining football from both teams. Despite being two goals in arrears at the end of fourteen minutes the City fought back to have periods of definite superiority, in which their speedy attacking football unsettled the home defence.

York City:- Forgan; Bingley and Perry;
Woods, Jackson, and Fountain; Gould, Wilkinson, Stainsby, Rudd, and Heron.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth, Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson;McMillan, Carter, Henderson, Pierce, and Jenkins.

Referee:- Mr J.S.Pickles of Stockport.

York never looked strong enough to throw off this persistent threat even when leading by two goals, but there was a period in the second half when they might have got a decisive lead. They were leading by 3 goals to 2 when Wilkinson headed against the post and Rudd from the rebounded struck the crossbar, Yet Exeter coolly recovered from this lively period and never stopped challenging. Exeter's danger men in attack were the right wing pair, McMillan and his partner, Carter. Bingley from the penalty spot scored York's first goal, Gould having been fouled by Mitchell, and seven minutes later Exeter fell behind again. Exeter then demonstrated why they had gained four successive wins, and developed some clever movements. From one of them McMillan put the ball across for Carter to head a fine goal. Then in the opening minutes of the second half Jenkins paved the way for Carter to level the scores with another bounding header. Jenkins got Exeter's third goal.
