CITY WIN AGAIN & SOUTHPORT HAVE A MAN SENT OFF.
MARCH 23RD 1963
EXETER CITY 2 SOUTHPORT 1.
Exeter City, unbeaten since the resumption of football last month and with nine points from their last five matches, were full of confidence when they went out to meet Southport at the Park, for the visitors had the worst away defensive record in the League. The City came off the field 90 minutes later with two more points, but their 2-1 victory was far from being one of their best.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick;
Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; McMillan, Carter, Henderson, Pierce, and Jenkins.
Southport:- Harris; Cairns and Beanland; Wallace, Darvell, and Rutherford; Cooper, Murdock, Blore, Spence, and Perry.
Referee: Mr P.G.Brandwood of Kidderminster.
This in contrast to most recent ones was a very scrappy game, and one that the City made hard work of simply because they failed to show enough fight against a very poor, but often determined, team. Harvey played extremely well in the City defence and appears to have made a complete recovery after breaking his leg. Tinsley, when he had something to do, handled very cleanly. The forwards were a scrappy lot in front of goal, and Carter's shot, an acrobatic looking overhead kick, which beat the goalkeeper, was about the only real piece of initiative. Harvey scored Exeter's first goal with a penalty after Jenkins had been brought down by Cairns. Just after Carter had scored Exeter's second goal he was deliberately fouled by Rutherford, and after the referee had had a word with one of the linesmen the Southport player was ordered off.
- Playing at Poole in the Western League the City Reserves were given a beating by Poole Town, 4 goals to none.
