NEWPORT PLAYER GIVES EXETER VICTORY BY ACCIDENT.

SATURDAY APRIL 6TH 1963:
CITY 1 NEWPORT COUNTY 0.

Exeter City took another two points, this time at the expense of Newport County, but they made it hard for themselves. Chance after chance was frittered away by the forwards, and to their shame, even the one goal which gained Exeter the points was put through by the Newport centre-half against his own side. Having now won seven and drawn two of their last nine matches the City have risen from fifth from the bottom of the League table to thirteenth. Furthermore, with a gap of 16 points between them and the top club, Brentford, and one of 18 between them and the team at the other end, Hartlepools, the City can claim to be nearer to the head than to the tail.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; McMillan, Carter, Henderson, Pierce, and Jenkins.

Newport County:- Weare; Bird and Frowen; Sullivan, Rathbone, and Bowman; Hudson, Webster, Bonson, Hunt, and Smith.

Referee:- Mr C.A.R.Woan, of London.

Derek Sullivan, the former Welsh international half-back who played in all but two of the City's League matches last season, figured at right half for the Ironsides today, but Peter Gordon, whose move to Newport took place on the same day, did not appear. Showing all his well remembered defensive strength it was Sullivan who blocked the first shot on the Newport goal, by Henderson, in the opening minutes. Nothing was scored until the very last minute when in trying to clear a shot by Henderson which rebounded off the arms of the goalkeeper Rathbone pushed the ball into his own net.

  • The City Reserves were beaten at Bridgwater 2-0 and MacDonald was taken off, injured.
