Match 43
18th April 1963
Western League
Bristol Rovers Reserves (a)

20th April 1963
Bradford City (h)

SELLS'S TRIO OF GOALS: CITY RESERVES WIN AGAIN. THURSDAY APRIL 18TH: BRISTOL ROVER RES. 2
EXETER CITY RES. 3.

Exeter City Reserves well deserved their victory at Eastville but made hard work of it by allowing the Rovers to equalise twice. All the Exeter goals were scored by Charlie Sells, and whereas the City played like a team the Rovers played like a set of robust and blundering individuals, running themselves into all kinds of need less troubles. After nine minutes Exeter took the lead, Sells jumping up high to head McMillan's centre past the Bristol goalkeeper. The first attack by the Rovers came in the 18th minute, and this produced the equaliser, Trude scoring. Five minutes before the interval Sells scored again, but within a minute the Rovers levelled matters, Hudd beating Clark. But the City made sure of the points in the second half when Sells scored with a penalty to complete his hat-trick.

City Res:- Clark; Quarrington, Hughes; Rutley, Johnston, Grace; McMillan, Welsh, Southcombe, Sells, and Wills.

POOR DISPLAY SEES EXETER CITY LOSE AT HOME.

SATURDAY APRIL 20TH:

EXETER CITY 0
BRADFORD CITY 2.

Exeter City until today had not lost at home this year, but their recent form has not been too convincing. Welsh was dropped and Pierce brought back into a reshuffled forward line in an attempt to get more punch and both points from Bradford City at St James's Park.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Carter, Henderson, Pierce, and Jenkins.

Bradford City:- Downie; Flockett and Ellam; Stowell, Smith, and Harland;
Storton, Devitt, Green, Webster, and Bircumshaw.

Referee:- Mr J.E.Cooke of Cambridge. Linesmen:- Messrs B.H.Watts and E.W.Owers.

Bradford City, who are bottom but one in the League, are a poor side and looked it, but Exeter on today's display are just as bad

  • The Western League match due to be played at Weymouth by the City Reserves was cancelled owing to heavy rain.
