ROVERS HIT BACK AFTER CITY HAD THE LEAD.
SATURDAY APRIL 27TH:
TRANMERE 2 EXETER CITY 1.
After both goals had had some lucky escapes Exeter City took the lead in the 55th minute, Carter hitting the ball past Leyland with a crashing shot, which followed a spectacular run up the wing and centre by Welsh. But the home team struck back and after equalising with a penalty, awarded against Patrick for flooring Dyson in the area, scored the winning goal in the closing few minutes.
Tranmere Rovers:- Leyland; Wilson and Conroy; King, P.Jackson, and Gubbins;
Campbell, Dyson, Hickson, D.Jackson, and Roberts.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Welsh, Sells, Henderson, Carter, and Rees.
Referee:- Mr J.R.Loynton of Solihull.
Heavy rain during the morning had made the pitch soft and slippery on the top surface. Exeter certainly made an improvement on their recent performances but missed several good chances when on top and through giving away a penalty allowed Tranmere to hit back at them.
Western League
CITY RESERVES 1 TAUNTON TOWN 2
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
The game started in a lifeless fashion, with neither team showing the initiative, and twenty minutes had gone by before anything like a serious attack was mounted or a shot at goal essayed. Then Stuckey forced Stone to pull off a diving save with a strong shot from an oblique angle.
City Res:- Clark; Quarrington, Johnston; Rutley, Grace, Hughes; Stuckey, Redwood, Southcombe, Pierce, and Jenkins.
Taunton Town:- Stone; Thomas, Bailey; Davis, Deplidge, Rawson; Rivers, Sage, Baker, Murray, and Wring.
An indirect free kick inside the penalty area instead of a penalty was given when Jenkins was brought down. This brought no reward, but at last the City scored. Then they let the game slip away from them.
