CITY RETURN TO WINNING WAYS-MITCHELL THE STAR.
MONDAY APRIL 29TH
SOUTHPORT 1 EXETER CITY 3.
Having gained only two points from their previous five games, the City returned to winning form, when at Southport they obtained their seventh "away" win of the season and their third "double." They became only the third team to beat Southport on their own pitch this season, and were well worthy of the points, their victory being as complete as the score of 3-1 suggests.
Southport:- Harris; Cairns, Beanland; English, Darvell, Rutherford; Peat, Murdock, Blore, Spence, and Perry.
Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Welsh, Sells, Henderson, Carter, and Rees.
Charlie Sells scored Exeter's first goal and Welsh the other two after Peat had equalised for Southport. Exeter were quicker on the ball and had better attacking ideas than the home side. The veteran wing half, Arnold Mitchell, was the star player for Exeter and the "man of the match." Allowed too much scope by the home inside forwards, who played a very weak game, Mitchell seized the advantage to link up with his own forwards time and time again.
EXETER CITY'S YOUTH TEAM AT HIGHBURY.
Last year the Exeter City juniors earned a lot of admiration and praise for their efforts in the Football Association Youth Cup, but were eventually beaten by Plymouth Argyle. This year they have done even better, turning the tables on the Argyle, then getting the better of Bristol City and Bexley. Those victories took them into the fourth round, in which they had to travel to Highbury to face the Arsenal Juniors.
Exeter fight bravely, but class tells
Arsenal 3. Exeter City 0
Exeter City were not outfought, but they were outclassed in this fourth round F.A. Youth Cup-tie at Highbury last night.
Their attack, which had scored 25 goals in the previous round, did not seem able to get a grip on the light, bouncing ball, and their defence, which had concede only four goals, had no answer to the individual brilliance of the Arsenal forwards.
Much of the damage was done by Arsenal's international left-wing pair, Sammels and Whittaker. It was Whittaker's corner which made inside-right Bloomfield's goal to give Arsenal the half-time lead.
In the second half Arsenal got more and more on top with centre-forward Radford scoring twice.
Exeter's best forward was local amateur Alan Riding; their best defender Crediton-born left-half Chris Gillard.
Arsenal:- Burns; Storey, Hepplewhite; Adams, Milne, Simpson; Tawse, Bloomfield, Radford, Sammels, and Whittaker.
City: Sidey; Quarrington, Arberry; Rutley, Grace, Gillard; Stuckey, Redwood, Riding, Jones, and Wills.
