Match 47
6th May 1963
Devon Championship Bowl
Exeter City v Plymouth Argyle

EXETER CITY RETAIN THE DEVON CHAMPIONSHIP BOWL. MONDAY MAY 6TH
EXETER CITY 1
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 0

When they have a good team against them Exeter City play their best football. They always have done, and Monday evening's final of the Devon Professional Championship was no exception. The crowd of just below three thousand at St James's Park saw the City play more good football in the 90 minutes it took them to beat the Argyle's Second Division side than they have seen in the last four League matches put together.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Grace, Harvey, and Anderson; Welsh, Sells, Henderson, Carter, and Rees.

Plymouth Argyle:- Leiper; Reeves and Davis; Williams, Newman, and Buckingham; Brace, McAnearney, Trebilcock, O'Neil, and McParland.

Exeter of course are not always in the Argyle class, but after a rather fiddling first half when they spent most of their time on the defensive, the City suddenly blossomed out with a series of hard-hit, long through balls which made the Pilgrims wish that they hadn't taken it quite so easily. For Plymouth had started the game at little more than half-pace. They made the ball do the work and kept their own efforts to a minimum by anticipation and close passing.

Exeter had to do all the running and chasing; that was where the difference in class showed. But in the end the City won through by sheer persistance allied to a lot of clever football, and too late the Argyle tried to speed up and make the effort that would save the game.

The goal that kept the "Bowl" at Exeter came ten minutes from time when Rees pulled his centre back just out of Leiper's reach, and Sells ran in to slam the ball into the net.
