THREE GOAL DEFEAT AND TINSLEY SAVES A PENALTY.

SATURDAY MAY 11TH 1963

ROCHDALE 3 EXETER CITY 0.

With a reshuffled team Exeter City were never in the hunt against the far superior Rochdale team. In the first half they were completely outplayed, the forward line showing neither drive nor ideas. The second half brought a slight improvement, but Rochdale always held the whip hand, and but for some magnificent goalkeeping on the part of Tinsley, who as well as everything else, also brought off a penalty save from Milburn after Harvey had grounded Cairns, the score would have been doubled.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth, Patrick; Grace, Harvey, Anderson; Rees, Sells, Henderson, Mitchell, and Jenkins.

Exeter City Reserves 2-1 Weston Super Mare

RESERVES WERE A FAILURE

All that Exeter City Reserves can hope is that the retained list won't be decided on their last performance. For even though they beat Weston-super-Mare 2-1 at St. James's Park on Saturday they wouldn't have a chance of being kept on that showing, writes TONY COURT.

As potential first-team men they were a complete failure, for they only barely scraped home against a Western League side which didn't seem to have an ounce of real talent.

Both sides were disjointed, and the result was a completely unattractive scramble, in which Exeter's only saving grace was that they were slightly more polished and always gave the impression that they might suddenly turn on some form. They never did, but they got a 55th-minute goal from Pierce and an 80th-minute goal from South- combe. Mogg scored for Weston. and Amesbury had a last-minute penalty saved by Tony Clark. Once again, it is only fair to conclude that the league itself is as much to blame as anything, for several of these City men have been in the first team, and proved that they can do better. When they get in the Reserves they seem to get dragged down to the general standard.

Exeter City:
Clark; Quarrington, MacDonald; Rutley. Johnston. Hughes; McMillan, Riding, South- combe. Pierce, Stuckey.

Weston:
Wright: Mogg. Chandler: Bass, Lovell. Clarke: Middle, Ames- bury, Hughes, Clare, Brain.
