Match 50
17th May 1963
Brentford (h)

And in the Western League
Welton Rovers (a)

LAST HOME MATCH IS A THRILLING ONE.

FRIDAY MAY 17TH:
EXETER CITY 2 BRENTFORD 2

Exeter City finished off their home programme by making a draw with Brentford, who have won the championship. And if Exeter could have played all through the season as they did against the "Bees" they might have got promotion as well.

Exeter City:- Tinsley; Smyth and Patrick; Anderson, Harvey, and Mitchell; Welsh, Sells, Henderson, Carter, Rees.

Brentford:- Ryecroft; Coote and Gitsham; Scott, Gelson, and Higginson; Block, Fielding, McLeod, Dick, and Hales.

Referee:- Mr D.W.Smith of Stonehouse. Linesmen:- Messrs K.C.Hanham and D.T.Markell.

Henderson's loss of form coincided with the team's loss of form in recent weeks, but today he "clicked" again, and it was thanks to him that the City got into their stride after being a goal behind at the interval. Henderson got Exeter's first goal only a couple of minutes after the resumption, and then he put Sells through to beat Ryecroft all ends up as he swept the ball home to put Exeter ahead for the first time, but Scott moved up to head home Block's corner kick with about ten minutes left. It was a game which had its share of mistakes, but there were very few dull moments, and the crowd of just under five thousand, some of whom had travelled down from London, had their money's worth.

  • Western League
WELTON ROVERS 1 EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.

Although defending in the early stages at Bristol, the City took a surprise lead in the 23rd minute through Pierce.
Simmons scored for Welton Rovers in the second half, and Redwood replied for the Reserves. The Western League fixtures are complete at last in this long drawn out season.
