Match 51
22nd May 1963
Crewe Alexandra (a)

FOOTBALL'S FAREWELL AFTER NINE MONTHS.

WEDNESDAY MAY 22ND 1963:

CREWE 1 EXETER CITY 0.

It took Crewe Alexandra, who have won promotion, eighty minutes to crack a solid Exeter defence. It was a match the home team could not afford to have lost, for a defeat would have kept them in Division 4, and for most of the game they monopolised the play. Yet the City, who packed the penalty area to counter incessant attacks, never panicked, and kept the issue in doubt until Lord finally found an opening to shoot home the precious goal that the eight thousand spectators were waiting to see.

CITY MADE CREWE FIGHT ALL THE WAY.

It took Crewe 80 minutes to crack a solid Exeter City defence and clinch promotion to the Third division, it was a match Crewe had to win, they monopolised the play, yet City who packed the penalty area to counter the incessant attacks, never panicked and kept the issue in doubt until Lord finally found an opening to shoot home from an acute angle to give Crewe victory.

Man of the match was City keeper Tinsley, who made several saves brilliantly, apart from the goal was beaten only once, again it was Lord, but the ball rebounded from a post, City were so busy defending in the first half that they only managed one shot at goalDuring the last half hour of the game with Crewe pushing forward and leaving gaps at the back, Carter and Rees saw shots pushed over the bar by Hickson.

Crewe, quick and progressive played the sort of football that would have shattered many a defence, but Exeter from their whole hearted endeavours might too have been battling for promotion, they never buckled and made Crewe scrap every inch of the way, Crewe have not played a harder game all season.
