GRIMSBY TOWN 2
(Anderson og, Jobling)
EXETER  CITY 1 (Carter)

Saturday August 29th at Grimsby.

The faces were familiar, the names were the same, but Exeter City's side were just shadows of the side in the two previous games, it was such a scrappy, rough, unsettled sort of game that it was not worth two points to anyone. The fact that Grimsby play a similar sort of system as City might have something to do with it, the styles cancelled each other out and it produced negative football,

There was no lack of effort from Exeter, they ran just as far and tackled just as hard as anyone could want, it was just that the whole thing seemed aimless, City were right out of luck on two Occasions. Three minutes before half time Anderson was hit by a Hill shot andit flew into the net with Barnett stranded, Then in the last 15 minutes MacDonald's shot dropped into the Grimsby net but was disallowed because Carter and Curtis were offside.

Carter who had a good game scored Exeter's equaliser three minutes into the second half, but Jobling restored Grimsby's advantage in the 69th minute. Even if City had not had this sudden loss of form, Grimsby would have been a hard side to beat. They were big, they were dast and they were strong and when the luck was running they had it their way.

Grimsby Town:- Wright; Thompson, Keeble; Cockerill, Clifton, Jobling; Pennington, Tees, McLean, Foster, Hill.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Fulton, MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Curtis, Banks, Carter, Hancock, Rees.

Attendance :- 7737

WESTERN LEAGUE
EXETER CITY RES (Redwood) 1
FROME (Simmons, Bartlett) 2.

FROME TOWN'S Western League side have made a promising start to the season. They have played four games, and won three of them, taking six points out of a possible eight. So far they have scored six goals, and had four scored against them.

On Saturday they put up a good performance when they recorded a 2-1 victory at St. James Park. Exeter, against the City Reserves. Exeter took the lead after 25 minutes through Barry Redwood. their outside-left, but Simmons, Frome's 17-years-old outside left equalised just before the interval. In the 70th minute Royston Bartlett, Frome's left-half, went tearing through the defence to take the ball on the rebound off the keeper and smash it into the net.

This return to form after their mid-week 3-0 defeat at home at the hands of Dorchester Town was a welcome one, but there were two casualties - Garnet Sunderland. the goalkeeper and Ivor Love, the outside-right.

Frome Town:- Sunderland; McCormack, Linton; Macarg, Doughty, Bartlett; Love, Chedgy, Coombs, Henderson, Simmons.
