Match 04
September 2nd 1964,
Football League Cup 1st Round
Gillingham (home)

Western League,
Dorchester (away)

EXETER CITY 2  (Carter, Banks)
GILLINGHAM 0

Wednesday September 2nd at St James's Park.

Another game, another plan, and another win. This time a toppling of Gillingham, which means a lift into the second round of this season's League Cup competition for Exeter City. The "other plan" was a switch from the 4-2-4 system to one of a more direct and open style of play and it was carried out very smoothly.

The game was hard, too hard at times, and the referee had a real job on his hands to keep control of it, it was only the self control of the City players that prevented it from turning into a free fight, Gillingham stuck to their tactics that won them promotion from the Fourth Division last season and were ultra defensive, it riled the crowd into slow clapping and jeers at half time and the end,

City took a 44th minute lead when Carter threaded through on to a slow back pass from Burgess, In the second half City started to control the game and after Hudson had stopped a Curtis shot on the line and Simpson made a point blank save on the fine from Anderson, Banks got his first goal of the season, with a perfectly timed header from a Rees cross in the 70th minute.

The win was well enough deserved, Welsh and Carter could have got more goals for the City if Simpson had not made two brilliant saves, Gillingham made few real openings and Meredith missed two chances they had by swinging his shots wide, Man of the match for City was Curtis who seemed to have surged to a new dynamic force as an inside forward, He was devestating with his distribution and dangerous in front of goal.
