September 3rd 1966
Tranmere Rovers (a)
Tranmere v Exeter City
SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER 1966.
DULL PERFORMANCE.
TRANMERE ROVERS 1.
Cumbes; Parnell, Robertson; Ashworth, McFarland, King; Hill, Manning, Dyson, Pritchard, Williams
EXETER CITY 1.
Jones; Smyth, Ley; Wilkinson, Harford, Thompson; Godfrey, Keeley, Elliott, Evans, Blain,
Before this game Tranmere Rovers and Exeter City had played a total of 360 minutes of league football between them without scoring a goal. They both broke their ducks to get a draw which was just about a fair result of a dull and often artless match, Ken Jones had a great afternoon in the City goal, but the side as a whole never clicked and they certainly missed the hustle and bustle of George McLean, City struggled to settle down and it was nearly 20 minutes before they put a shot in and Tranmere looked particularly dangerous especially on the wings, Surprisingly though it was City who took the lead. Ken Thompson curled in a low shot past Cumbes but the lead did not last long, Hill hit a post, then Williams equalised with three minutes remaining of the first half. The second half was fairly even but the game went through a really bad patch with scrappy football from both sides and poor finish to the few attacks that were made. It was not a very impressive City performance at all but once again they did seem to be lasting the pace well. Ken Jones who had dealt with à stream of high centres superbly had to receive treatment twice in the closing stages.
Match Summary
Before today's game Tranmere Rovers and Exeter City had played a total of 360 minutes between them without scoring a goal. This afternoon they both broke their ducks to get a draw of one goal apiece, which was just about a fair reflex of a dull and often artless match. The City scored first through Thompson, his first goal for them, and the club's third from a defender. Jones had a great afternoon in Exeter's goal, but the side never clicked as a whole as it did at Torquay on Wednesday, and they certainly missed the hustle and strength of big George McLean at centre forward. Tranmere broke through on the wing in the first minute, and a quick shot from Dyson must have scored but for a sensational save by Jones, who leapt up and held the ball under the cressbar. Six minutes after Thompson's goal Williams equalised as the City defenders milled about in their six-yard area unable to clear the ball.
