Exeter City are on the Football League Cup trail. They defeated Second Division Cardiff City at Ninian Park and fully deserved it, Everyone worked hard and there is no doubt at all that Exeter were the better side in the first half, They moved the ball well and looked impressive and far more dangerous than Cardiff. Having said that, Cecil Smyth did kick one shot of the Exeter goalline. The goal that Exeter had threatened to score came a minute before the intervalRay Harford got the ball from a throw in, beat a couple of tackles and scored with a well placed shot. Then in the second half came City's biggest test when Cardiff did most of the attackingSmyth saved yet another certain goal with a goalline clearance. As time ran out Cardiff got more and more desparate, but the City never gave up and they hung on for the win they deserved. The best City effort in the second half came from Ken Thompson, a 30 yard shot that was brilliantly saved by John, City had proved that they were a better side than most Cardiff supporters had expected to see,
Having beaten Torquay United of the 3rd Division and now Cardiff City of the 2nd, the City are on the Football League Cup trail. Within 90 minutes at Ninian Park Exeter had won and proved that they were a better side than the Cardiff supporters had expected to see. Cardiff wasted three good chances, which they will now regret, before Exeter took the lead one minute from half-time. Harford got the ball from a throw-in and eluded two defenders in the penalty area before finding the net with a well placed shot.
Cardiff City 0 Exeter City 1.
ST JAMES' PARK FACILITIES CRITICISED.
An Exeter City supporter has criticised facilities or the lack of them at St James' Park, He lists in a letter to the Express and Echo a few of the things he would like to see put rightThey included the ancient terracing, rotting sleepers, unlit, unbolted and filthy toiletsHe also states that on one occasion he had to leave the ground just before the end of the game, but when he went to the exit he found the doors locked, That meant he had to clamber through the stand customers before emerging at the end of Well Street, The letter ends: "If the directors want support, they must consider the ordinary four shilling fans,"
FRIDAY 16th SEPTEMBER 1966.
EXETER CHIEF IS PLEASED.
Exeter City manager Jock Basford is pleased with the progress he is making in team building at St James Park, As always the City supporters are impatient for results, but when one is building from scratch after relegation, (City parted company with 16 players at the end of last season), it takes time, Local opinion so far generally favours Ken Thompson from Ipswich Town as the best of the newcomers, while the club can scarcely believe it's good fortune in obtaining such a fine goalkeeper as Ken Jones, a free transfer signing from Charlton Athletic,
SATURDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 1966. SECRETARY REPLIES TO FAN.
Exeter City secretary Dick Miller this week replied to the letter recieved by the Express and Echo a few days ago complaining about the amenities at St James' Park, Mr Miller said he was rather surprised and a little concerned to realise that a supporter felt it necessary to write to the Press in the first instance, rather than the City club. He added: "We at St James' Park are only too willing to meet anyone to discuss problems and while we realise that the facilities we have to offer do not compare with First Division clubs, we none the less endeavour to give the best we can,"
John Edgar who spent the 1963-64 season with Exeter City is now playing for Matlock Town in the Midland League.
