City failed to beat Port Vale's defensive barrier after conceding an early goal and the visitors kept their unbeaten record this season, As soon as they scored they were content to fall back on defence for the rest of the match, pulling sometimes as many as ten men back in defence, and City could not find a way through,

Port Vale scored the only goal in their first attack, Miles beating Ken Jones with an angled shot, Sproson showed his experience as City tried to break through Vale's defence, Exeter were having far more of the game but their moves were breaking down too often, Ren Thompson was getting through a lot of hard work and put some good passes to his colleagues, The second half was much the same pattern. No matter how the City attacked, they got no change from the Vale defence. Everytime Vale cleared McCartney was the only man upfield to chase in the Exeter half. Ray Keeley's snap shot almost broke their resistence but it flew inches over the bar, but Port Vale kept City out and their unbeaten record intact,

Match Summary
Exeter City completely failed to break Port Vale's defensive barrier at St James's Park after conceding a goal in the ninth minute. Port Vale, who are unbeaten, this season, played a tactical game once they had secured the lead, and for the rest of the first and the whole of the second half fell back in defence. With ten men packing their half of the field and often their own penalty area they were content to let Exeter come at them, and the City could not find a way through.
