Fewer than 4,000 spectators went to see City defeat Crewe for their first home win of the season, with football that belied their unfortunate position in Division Four, City cut the Crewe defence to pieces and it could have been six, as City totally outplayed CreweThe game opened slowly and soon gathered momentum as Exeter's ball play began to flow. City seemed anxious to please the crowd and too anxious to get in a shot, whatever the distance. It took them 43 minutes to score through Peter Godfrey, the goal they desereved, Dixie McNeil making his home debut scored the second after 56 minutes and from then on, Exeter pressed continuously but failed to add to their total. Crewe's best player was Archer, who had signed from Bournemouth for a four figure fee in a television room of an Exeter hotel, City still need more steadiness, more experience and someone with Alan that Jimny greaves like thrust inside the penalty area that has been missing from the Park since Banks was in his heyday.
Match Summary
Fewer than 4,000 spectators went to St James's Park to see Exeter beat Crewe. The City played the kind of football that belies their position in the Fourth Division, at the wrong end of the table. Whoever it was that said that young men in their late 'teens and early twenties playing calm and intelligent football were out of place in this lowest section of the Football League, the alleged home of the big boot and the crunching tackle should have been at the Park to see Exeter City's youngsters performing against Crewe. The City beat Crewe with good football, not by kick and rush, and their younger players contributed to this every bit as much as the older and more experienced ones. And Crewe, to their credit, came prepared to make a proper game of it, to go all out for two points instead of holding one for one, and to use five men in attack instead of three. Godfrey and McNeil scored Exeter's goals.

NONE FROM CREWE.
Exeter City have never signed a player from Crewe AlexandraThis may not sound too remarkable, but it is when you realise that City have secured players from over 100 different English and Scottish League clubs, either on a free transfer or by paying a fee,
