City v Walsall
October 5th 1966

FOOTBALL LEAGUE CUP 3rd. Round.

FIVE MINUTE KNOCKOUT BLOW FOR CITY.

EXETER CITY 1.
Jones; Embery, Ley; Wilkinson, Harford, Thompson; Keeley, McLean, Elliott, McNeil, Smith,
WALSALL 2
Carling; Gregg, Evans; Sissons, Bennett, Atthey; Smith, Baker, Middleton Heath), McMorran, Taylor

Scorers: Exeter McNeil, Walsall Baker, Meath. Attendance: 5,487, Exeter City's Football League Cup hopes came to an abrupt halt when Walsall scored twice in five minutes with fine goals from Baker and Heath after 30 and 35 minutes respectively. City promptly lost the rhythm that had kept them in control until that point and given them a fine 21st minute goal by Dixie McNeil who scored from 15 yards. City never really recovered from those two goals but their was a passion in the second half that deserved a better reward, George Ley hit a tremendous 35 yard free kick that was turned away by Carling for a corner, and Ray Keeley too saw a fine effort saved by the Walsall keeper, Exeter also showed a degree of over anxiety when Ray Elliott missed badly in front of goal.

Disappointing though the defeat was, in view of City's recent improvement, it was sustained against a side who were ruthless in defence and fast and clever in attack, City were never quite able to Combine class with speed as they did effectively in their last two games.

CITY AGREE TO EVANS REQUEST.

Inside forward John Evans has been placed on the transfer list at Eexter City at his own request. The decision was taken at last night's board meeting, It is their policy not to stand in the way of any player who wishes to leave the club, City will ask a fee for Evans who was signed from Carlisle United in March,

CITY TO ARGYLE.

With the transfer of Alan Banks and Peter Shearing at the end of last season to Plymouth Argyle, it is surprising to note that only three other City players have left St James' Park for Home Park, They were centre forward Arthur Rutter in 1913, outside right Alf Matthews in 1926, and goalkeeper Arthur Davies in 1935, The City looked the better team in the early stages, and some intelligent passes opened up the Walsall defence. After 21 minutes McNeil scored, and a fine goal it was. But when Walsall fought back from 0-1 to 2-1 in four minutes, Baker finding the net in 30 minutes and Meek in 34 the style went out of Exeter's football and they never got it back again. To lose this game after such a fine start was disappointing, but too much blame should not be attached to the Exeter team. They tried hard and played well in as gruelling 90 minutes as they can expect all the season, it rained continuously, and Walsall, as befits their position near the top of Division Three, are an experienced and a tough side.
