Both Barrow and Exeter City missed chances in the first half, but after taking the lead four minutes after the interval, Barrow forced steadily ahead and sent City home with a five goal thrashing. In the first half play moved swiftly between both goals, but neither side had the necessary finish, Peter Godfrey probably had the best chance for City but he shot high and wide,"

In the 49th minute McAdam gave Barrow the lead and the whole patternof the game changedCity were McCarthy was particularly troublesome for the Exeter defence and ken Jones did well to save from him on one occasion, it was inevitable happened in the 70th minute when Smith put Barrow two in front. Five minutes later McCarthy was rewarded for some fine wing play driving into the City net from a McAdam pass, After a brief City flurry Mulholland headed in the fourth goal with eight minutes to goal. Barrow completed their tally in the 88th minute when Edwards completed Exeter City's misery.

Comment 
Both teams missed good chances of scoring in the first half of this Fourth Division match, but once they had taken the lead four minutes after the interval the Northern side forged steadily ahead and beat the City by 5 goals to 0.

At St James's Park Exeter City Reserves were kept on the defensive by Portland United, who scored a goal in each half. This was despite the presence in the City team of several players of League experience.
