Scorers: Exeter: Keeley, Ley, McNeilYork; Hawksby. Attendance; 4,174, Two goals midway through the second half and another just on time gave Exeter City victory over York City. But for 65 minutes they had looked a poor side, struggling against a York team who had taken the lead, Exeter cannot be satisfied with this performance for the visitors have not won an away point this season, City looked unsettled at the start and then Jack Kennedy had a shot fumbled by Fallon, Peter Godfrey shot yards wide of an open goalCity were looking very slow, their passing was inaccurate, and they were missing too many tackles, York, fortunately for City, were not much better. Both sides came close to opening their accounts before half time, City's keeper' ken Jones tipped over a powerful Burrows drive and Ray Keeley put in a good shot on the visitors goal, Shortly after the restart Hawksby's 20 yard shot beat Jones to give York the lead, City equalised in the 65th minute, George Ley shot from 35 yards and the ball flew into the net. A minute later Exeter were in front when Dixie McNeil headed in a cross from Ken ThompsonNow City were looking the better side, finding their men and creating more space. In the last minute Ray Keeley's shot hit the underside of the bar before going into the net.
Match Summary
Two goals midway through the second half and another just on time gave Exeter City a victory over a York City at St James's Park. But for 65 minutes they looked a poor side, struggling against York City team that had taken the lead in the third minute following the interval. Then George Ley, with one of the best shots of the afternoon, equalised, and within a minute the second goal was put through by McNeil, and in a goalmouth melee just before the close of play Keeley made victory certain. Even so, Exeter cannot be completely satisfied with this performance against a York side who are still looking for their first away point of the season.

This was a shock. Although playing seven men of first team experience Exeter City were beaten 4-1 at St James's Park in a friendly match by the Devon representative side, who had to bring in two reserves for the game. This was Devon's final trial before the start of the matches for the Southern Counties Amateur championship, the first of which will be at Plainmoor, Torquay, against Somerset on October 29th. And if the County team plays as well as it did against Exeter City, then it must have a great chance of beginning with a victory. Devon certainly deserved to win against a very poor looking City side, in which there were five players who have played in the Fourth Division this season. The county side fought for every ball on the slippery surface, and in fifteen minutes they took the lead through Greenham (Brixham). Within seven minutes Devon had increased their lead when Gillard, a former City player now with Dawlish, scored with a fine shot. Smith scored for Exeter was but ruled offside. Greenham then got another goal for Devon. Two minutes later Stuckey was bundled over in the penalty area, and Blain netted the spot-kick. Moxham (Torpoint) scored Devon's fourth goal.

ST. LUKES COLLEGE 1: EXETER CITY 1,

At the end of last season the Collegians pulled out of the South Western League and joined the Western League. It was a gamble. And when they lost all their opening four matches, during which time they conceded 17 goals, it looked as if the writing was on the wall for them. But since then they have won three games, and today they brought off their best League result when they held a full Exeter City side to a draw at the Cat and Fiddle Ground. Although this was a Western League match Exeter fielded the same team that beat York City in the Fourth Division last week-end, and it was not until two minutes from the end that Ley equalised the goal Mills had scored for the College after half an hour's play. Exeter were very poor. They never gained control of the match as they should have, and all too often they held on to the ball too long on a rain-soaked pitch, and in consequence were caught in possession far too many times.
Scorer St. Lukes: Exeter: Ley,, All praise to the College amateurs for holding and indeed almost beating Exeter City's full first team. It was not until two minutes from time that George Ley got a face saving equaliser following a free kick just outside the College penalty area. All in all this was a performance that City will not want to recall,
