City deserved to get a point from this match, They did not have the best of starts when Ken Thompson was carried off after 20 minutes suffering from concussion. This was bitter blow, for City were coming more and more into the game, but they were unsettled for the next 15 minutes and it was during this period that Barnsley took the lead,
Bettany scored the goal, heading a free kick past Ken Jones, City were within inches of scoring twice from shots by Ernie Wilkinson and Dixie McNeil, but after the Thompson injury, Barnsley did most of the attacking. In the second half City looked more confident. They played some good football at times and equalised after 57 minutes. From a free kick Peter Godfrey's shot was fumbled by Wood and McNeil followed up to push the ball into an empty net, ten minutes later Barnsley got the winner with a header from Briscoe, and they could have scored again shortly after, but Ben Embery headed off the line with Jones beaten, So City have picked up just one point out of four on their two match Northern tour.
Comment
Exeter City did not have the best of luck in this match. It all began in the twentieth minute, and this was the turning point of the whole game. Ken Thompson went up to challenge for a high ball with Swallow, the Barnsley right half. There was a clash in mid-air, and Thompson fell to the ground and stayed there. After a brief examination by Messrs Harvey and Basford and the referee a stretcher was called for, and the Exeter player was carried to the dressing room. Jimmy Blain then came on as the Exeter substitute. The City were unsettled for the next quarter of an hour, and it was during this period that Barnsley went into the lead. Blain did not let the side down, but some of the earlier method was noticeably lacking from Exeter's play, and in the 29th minute Blain and one or two others were badly positioned when Bettany at the far post headed a free kick past Jones. This was a second setback for the City, and then Kennedy had his name taken by the referee following a midfield scuffle with Bettany. In the second half the City seemed to be more confident again. They played some good football at times, and in the 57th minute McNeil scored in an empty net when Wood fumbled a shot from Godfrey. Ten minutes later Barnsley got the winner with a header from Briscoe, and three minutes after that Embury headed off the line with Jones out of his goal. The injury to Thompson was a bitter blow to Exeter, for until then the team was playing well and gradually coming more and more into the game. Thompson was found to be suffering from concussion, and after a while he was taken to Barnsley Becket Hospital, where he was detained over night.
WEDNESDAY 26th OCTOBER 1966.
KEN THOMPSON LEAVES HOSPITAL.
Ken Thompson, the Exeter City 21 year old, who was carried off on a stretcher in the game at Barnsley on Monday evening and taken to hospital with concussion was released today. He was picked up at the Barnsley hospital early this morning by the Barnsley F.C, manager, John Steele, and taken to Sheffield station to board a train to Exeter, A member of the City staff will meet him at St David's station this afternoon, Whilst he was detained in hospital, several of the Barnsley players went to visit him, which was described as a fine gesture by Exeter City manager Jock Basford,

KEITH HARVEY PLAYS AGAIN.
Keith Harvey, Exeter City trainer, who is still registered with the club as a player is included in the reserves side to play at Bridport on Saturday. Keith finished playing at the end of last season but today manager Jock Basford said it was not the start of a comeback, his future still lies on the trainers bench, But he is still a very active persons in himself. The reserve side has been going through a little bit of a bad time, and Mr Basford feels that they will benefit from Harvey's vast experience, reserve team trainer Bert Edwards will take over on the bench at St James' park on Saturday for the game against Chesterfield,
SONNY THE FORGOTTEN MAN.
The forgotten man at St Jamespark as far as the supporters are concerned is probably the club's groundsman Sonny Clarke, who has been in charge of the Park for 13 years. On Saturday morning before the game he goes to the ground to put out the corner flags and mark out the pitch again, He forks away water if it is wet and stakes the nets down, Sonny says if the weather is bad, it is sometimes a real struggle to get things done in time
